European Biocides Regulation

Water-based products are susceptible to bacterial and fungal growth. For this reason, preservatives – usually toxic biocides – are added: chemically produced substances that combat micro-organisms through chemical reactions. An effective solution to extend the shelf life of products in packaging and prevent wastage through premature decay.

But there is also a downside: the biocides continue to work after use and end up in the environment after a certain time due to leaching through air or water. For this reason, the use of toxic biocides is increasingly restricted by the European Biocides Regulation.

Humans, animals and the environment

Sting Additives works side by side with manufacturers who wish to reduce the content of preservative biocides in their water-based non-food products. Because of the regulations but also from the conviction that ‘less is more’. Because everyone benefits from fewer biocides: humans, animals and the environment, including the manufacturer and user.
